Introduction to the Qur'an
Evening at Emory - Humanities and Cultural Studies
As the sacred text of Islam, the Qur’an is among the most influential books in world history. It is recited by millions of Muslims in daily prayer; inscribed on monuments, decorative plaques, and jewelry; quoted in literary works and popular speech in Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Malay, and Swahili -- it permeates Islamic culture. Yet many are surprised to discover that the text relates the stories of Adam, Jesus, Abraham and other Biblical figures rather than the Prophet Muhammad and that the hero of the Qur’an is not Muhammad, but rather, Moses. In this course we will investigate the form and content of this fascinating text in English translation, exploring the text’s profound connections with the Bible and focusing on the Qur’anic theory of prophecy, the portrayal of figures from Jewish and Christian traditions, and the pre-Islamic Arabian material in the Qur’an. Tuition includes textbook.

Introduction to World Mysticism
Evening at Emory - Humanities and Cultural Studies
Madonna is studying the Kabbalah. The Shack is a runaway bestseller. Centuries after he died, everyone's reading Rumi. Yoga, Buddhism and other eastern practices are more popular among Americans than ever. So what gives? At the heart of all these cultural trends is mysticism, a vague word that can be translated as "the spiritual principle at the heart of religion." Many people believe mysticism is the golden thread that unites all the world's religions. Others scoff at the idea. Come decide for yourself in this class as we explore major themes and writings from the world's great mystical traditions. Using Andrew Harvey's The Essential Mystics as our textbook, we'll examine the world's great wisdom traditions — Taoism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, as well as pagan and philosophical forms of mysticism — acknowledging both the common ground and the distinctive qualities of each mystical path. Class is taught from an academic/nonsectarian perspective. Textbook: The Essential Mystics : Selections from the World's Great Wisdom Traditions

Faith and Doubt in Contemporary Southern Fiction
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute - Wednesday Morning
Both writers of literature and sociologists have long observed that for generations of Southerners, religion was a dominant and distinctive force. It was, for many years, the most traditional and lasting form of Southern community, and remains so today in the rural South. In this course we will look at short stories by a group of Southern authors living and writing today, selected for their focus on religious experience. We will observe its origins in slavery and Civil War defeat, the ways religion colors the lives of characters and the extent to which that tradition survives today. Stories by, and interviews of, such writers as Reynolds Price, Clyde Edgerton, Doris Betts and Lee Smith will figure in our discussion. Risk Management in Changing Times *NEW*
Professional Education Classes - Professional Development
Increasingly companies and organizations are responding to intense rivalry, market share erosion, economic downturns and constant change by encouraging more innovation and risk taking by their people. But is this permission enough to make it happen? And what can managers really do to facilitate this personally and with the people they lead and support? Although innovation through appropriate, applied risk taking behavior is essential for business growth and development, there are those who choose not to risk and change and therefore do not innovate. Why? Some people see risk as the potential to lose something. Some have had previous negative experiences with risk taking. And others work in an environment of conformance where risk sponsorship is low. This application-based workshop will give the participants insight into what risk is and the major factors influencing their own risk orientation. In addition to specific, personal risk strategies, participants will investigate those techniques to increase appropriate risk taking in their organizations.

Yet, notwithstanding all these remedies, stress-related incidences are on the rise in most firms today. This hard-hitting, no-nonsense workshop explores the essence of stress – what it really is, what causes it and what can effectively be done about it. And, while the sources that cause stress for us are unavoidable and mostly outside our control, there are some very specific tools available for our use that work. We will examine those techniques essential to successful stress management and improved performance.
