A Brief History of Everything

Evening at Emory - Humanities and Cultural Studies

American philosopher Ken Wilber's writings combine eastern and western spirituality, psychology, biology, cultural theory, and other strands of contemporary thought to create what the author calls "integral psychology." Wilber bridges science and religion, explains the dynamics of human consciousness and moral development, and speculates on future evolution of our species. Despite the complexity of his thoughts, many of Wilber's books are surprisingly accessible, including the textbook for this class A Brief History of Everything. In this class we'll read the book, discuss its merits, and consider how Wilber's ideas can impact the scientific and spiritual communities. Textbook is not included. A History of Hell(s)

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute - Thursday Morning

"Go to heaven for the climate; go to hell for the company." (Mark Twain) "Hell is other people." (Jean-Paul Sartre) "Hell is yourself." (Tennessee Williams) "Hell isn't merely paved with good intentions, it is walled and roofed with them." (Aldous Huxley) Hell is not a universal concept, but in the cultures where it exists it has served as the answer to some of life's most perennially vexing questions. From where does suffering and evil come? What is the afterlife like? Why be good? And most importantly, where do all those people go who really get on my nerves?! This class will explore some of history's most distinct visions and ideas of hell, paying special attention to the hells of western civilization. The instructor is a 4th year graduate student of American religion and culture at Emory University. His prior graduate work in the philosophy of religion was conducted at The California Institute of Integral Studies, in San Francisco, where he completed his thesis on the ethical dimensions and limitations of the Incarnation.

Appetite Awareness for Weight Concerns in collaboration with The New York Times Knowledge Network

Evening at Emory - Health and Natural Sciences

Are you tired of struggling with your weight and want to try a different approach? Appetite Awareness Training teaches you a new way to think about eating and weight. AAT is designed for people who want to lose weight, for people who have lost weight but could not keep it off, and for people who are in the normal weight range but feel like it takes way too much effort to maintain that weight. You can also use AAT to teach your children a healthy way to eat. Appetite awareness training is not a diet; it is a different way to make decisions about when to eat and when to stop eating. You don't have to follow a diet plan at all, but the approach is compatible with reasonably balanced diet plans so you can use a "diet" (a specific food plan) if you want to do so. AAT teaches you to "Eat with your stomach, not with your head." Using stomach cues helps protect you from the tempting, tasty food that is so easily available. Participants will learn to understand the biology of appetite and weight regulation so they can work with their body instead of fighting with it. Active participation through appetite self-monitoring done outside of class is also expected. Dr. Craighead will conduct a weekly discussion online during the times indicated. Textbook is not included. Textbook: The Appetite Awareness Workbook Textbook: The Appetite Awareness Workbook

The Certified Computer Examiner(CCE)® BootCamp is an intensive one week classroom and laboratory training course in computer forensic examinations that will teach you how to conduct forensically sound computer examinations that will prepare you to take the CCE certification examination. The CCE BootCamp® is the classroom version of the CFTCO.COM online training course. This is the original CCE BootCamp®. Our course will teach you how data is stored, where the data is located and how to recover all of the data. Our students will learn how to conduct thorough examinations and how to explain, interpret and draw the appropriate conclusions on what has been found and what it may mean. Regardless of which automated product that you may use, you will understand what the product is doing and you will be able to explain or testify about how and what you have found. We teach you how to conduct thorough examination, regardless of the tools that you use. Our course will teach you the core forensic procedures that will apply to examining any operating system or file system. During our course, we provide instruction on the logical structures of the FAT file system (** see why) utilized by DOS and Windows 9.x and the NTFS logical structures utilized by Windows NT, 2000 and XP. We have thoroughly studied the NTFS operating system and feel that our NTFS course material cannot be matched anywhere. The NTFS section provides detailed instruction about the partition table, the boot record, bitmaps, the root directory, the MFT, headers, attributes, resident files, non-resident files, run lists, alternate data streams, etc. Our training focus is not only on forensic recovery techniques, but on ensuring that what you find can be admitted in court. You will learn how to establish and use sound evidence handling procedures and how to conduct examinations using sound forensic examination procedures. Costs for initial online test is included in the tuition. Prerequisite: None.

Introduction to the Qur'an

Evening at Emory - Humanities and Cultural Studies

As the sacred text of Islam, the Qur’an is among the most influential books in world history. It is recited by millions of Muslims in daily prayer; inscribed on monuments, decorative plaques, and jewelry; quoted in literary works and popular speech in Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Malay, and Swahili—it permeates Islamic culture. Yet many are surprised to discover that the text relates the stories of Adam, Jesus, Abraham and other Biblical figures rather than the Prophet Muhammad, and that the hero of the Qur’an is not Muhammad, but Moses. Join us to investigate the form and content of this fascinating text in English translation. Topics of dicussion include the text’s often ignored yet profound connection with the Bible, the Qur’anic theory of prophecy, the portrayal of figures from Jewish and Christian traditions, and the pre-Islamic Arabian material in the Qur’an. Introduction to World Mysticism

Evening at Emory - Humanities and Cultural Studies

Madonna is studying the Kabbalah. The Shack is a runaway bestseller. Centuries after he died, everyone's reading Rumi. Yoga, Buddhism and other eastern practices are more popular than ever. So what gives? Central to these cultural trends is mysticism, a vague word that can be translated as "the spiritual principle at the heart of religion." Many people believe mysticism is the golden thread that unites all the world's religions, while others scoff at the idea. Decide for yourself in this class as we explore major themes and writings from the world's great mystical traditions. Using Andrew Harvey's The Essential Mystics as our textbook, we'll examine the world's great wisdom traditions — Taoism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, as well as pagan and philosophical forms of mysticism — acknowledging both the common ground and the distinctive qualities of each mystical path. Class is taught from an academic/nonsectarian perspective. Textbook is not included. Imperial Spain: Fact or Fiction?

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute - Wednesday Morning

During the 16th and 17th centuries, the empire of Spain circled the globe. It was a time of adventurous exploration and discovery of untold treasures of gold and silver in the Americas, as well as exotic spices in the Far East. Yet it also was a time of bloodshed as the Castilians fought the English, the French, and rebels in the Low Countries, the forces of the Reformation and the imperial navy of the Ottomans. Over this presided the figures of Charles V and Philip II; but was their empire real or imagined by later historians? This course begins with a review of Classical Spain, the arrival of the Vandals, the Visigoths and Moors and concludes with a discussion of post- Napoleonic Spain. In addition to the perspective of history, the course will provide an opportunity to discuss the nature of empire and lessons that may be applied to the modern condition.

Pacifism and Just War in the Early Church *NEW*

Evening at Emory - Humanities and Cultural Studies

One of the more fascinating aspects of the early history of Christianity is the interplay between pacifism and just war mentalities. Significant groups of church fathers held that participating in war was forbidden to Christians. While these voices were prominent during earlier time periods, with the rise of Emperor Constantine came new ideas and ideals. Ambrose and Augustine’s writings have been accepted as the basis for just war beliefs within the church. In this course we will read the writings of Origen, Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Ambrose, and Augustine—and some modern commentaries. We will contrast the different approaches to the subject of war and Christianity, while considering their relevance to our own questions about these issues. This course is in partnership with the Aquinas Center of Theology at Emory University.

Putting the Theatre Back Into the Play

Evening at Emory - Writer's Studio

Many playwrights write scripts that are not theatrical. Or, they write plays that are more literary than producible or stage-worthy. Or they write something that can only be done on film. The goal of this course is to write plays that have action and story, that capture the unique immediacy of the stage, and that are not trying to be a film script. The reward will be plays that are more attractive to potential theatres and directors. Students must bring in the beginnings of a play project although it may still be in a very preliminary stage. Class time will include writing, sharing, and discussion. Students will need to do some writing and assigned reading outside of class. Students will need to purchase or borrow two plays: Fences by August Wilson and Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl.
