Putting the Theatre Back Into the Play

Many playwrights write scripts that are not theatrical. Or, they write plays that are more literary than producible or stage-worthy. Or they write something that can only be done on film. The goal of this course is to write plays that have action and story, that capture the unique immediacy of the stage, and that are not trying to be a film script. The reward will be plays that are more attractive to potential theatres and directors. Students must bring in the beginnings of a play project although it may still be in a very preliminary stage. Class time will include writing, sharing, and discussion. Students will need to do some writing and assigned reading outside of class. Students will need to purchase or borrow two plays: Fences by August Wilson and Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl.
