Meet the instructors for Emory's Paralegal Certificate Program
All of our instructors are attorneys with demonstrated teaching abilities, superior knowledge of the subject matter, and are members of the State Bar of Georgia. Our topics classes are taught by practicing attorneys with expertise in each topic area.
Cicely Tabb Barber
Cicely Barber began her legal career by attending paralegal school in Atlanta at the National Center for Paralegal Training. She received an ABA approved certificate with a specialty in Civil Litigation. Her love for the law led her to enter law school. Cicely attended Thomas M. Cooley Law School in her home state of Michigan. She earned her Juris Doctor in May 2000. Cicely has been licensed to practice law in Georgia since November 2000. Presently Cicely is the staff attorney for Chief Judge A.L. Thomson of Fulton County State Court. Cicely has been teaching Georgia Practices and Procedures for the paralegal program at Emory since its inception in March 2005. Cicely has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Spelman College and prior to attending law school, she taught first grade in the Atlanta City Public School System. Cicely lives in Smyrna with her husband, Bryan. They have one daughter, Skylar.
Steve Dubner
Steve received his B.A. from The Johns Hopkins University in 1978 and his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law in 1979. He began his practice with a Wall Street firm then relocated to Atlanta and joined one of the ten largest firms in the city. In 1984 he left that firm to establish his own firm, Higgins & Dubner. He currently practices in the areas of corporate and business law, entertainment, estate planning and probate, civil litigation and other civil matters. He has been an instructor with the Small Business Development Center of Georgia State University for over 15 years. He also taught business law in the MBA program at Georgia State University and taught at Kennesaw State University. He has been a Core Instructor in the Emory Paralegal Program since its inception. He is married and has three children, five cats, one dog and one fish.
Ray English
Alfred Ray English (“Ray”) is originally from Columbus, Ohio and has resided in Atlanta, Georgia since 2000. He attended Wentworth Military Junior College on an ROTC scholarship and was recognized as a Distinguish Military Graduate, receiving a commission in the U.S. Army Reserve. Ray went on to graduate from The Ohio State University and Howard University School of Law, where he graduated cum laude. He served six years as a staff judge advocate in the U.S. Air Force. Ray served around the world in positions such as Chief of Contracts, Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, Area Defense Counsel and Director of Civil Law for the U.S. Air Force Reserve Command. Upon leaving the military, Ray worked two years as professor of law teaching criminal law and litigation. Since moving to Atlanta, Ray has been an associate at a law firm and general counsel for a governmental affairs firm.
Craig Hardesty
Craig Hardesty is the Manager of Paralegal Services for King & Spalding. Before joining the firm, he was the Director of Human Resources for an international software company. Craig received his paralegal certificate from NCPT: The National Center for Paralegal Training where he subsequently taught a variety of courses and served as the Director of Career Services, Dean of Students, and the Executive Director. Before joining NCPT, Craig was a paralegal and the program administrator for the Georgia Law Center for the Homeless and a Policy Associate for the Georgia Center for Nonprofits. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Towson State University and a Master of Public Administration from Georgia State University.
Harvey Hutchinson III, CFP®
biography Harvey Hutchinson serves as the Senior Financial Planner to the Private Client Services Group of Columbus Bank and Trust Company, a subsidiary of Synovus Financial Corp. Harvey is responsible for preparing and presenting comprehensive financial plans to the bank's affluent customers. Prior to joining Synovus / CB&T, Harvey practiced law with an emphasis in estate planning, estate and trust administration, business planning, tax planning, and retirement planning. Mr. Hutchinson's extensive formal education consists of three business degrees [B.S. (Finance), M.B.A., M.Acc.] and two law degrees [J.D. (Estate Planning & Business Planning), and LL.M. (Taxation)]. Furthermore, he holds the following certification and designations: Certified Financial Planner®, Retirement Plans Associate™, and Compensation Management Specialist™. Harvey held an adjunct faculty position with a university and has presented several seminars to attorneys, CPAs and financial advisors. Mr. Hutchinson is admitted to practice law in Alabama, Georgia, Texas and New York.
Jennifer John
Jennifer manages the professional learning classes and certificate programs offered through Emory University’s Center for Lifelong Learning. She is a Certified Program Planner (CPP) and is currently working on her Masters in Adult Education. Prior to her position with Emory, she served as the academic director at The National Center for Paralegal Training after obtaining her paralegal certification. Jennifer serves on the board of Emory’s Financial Planning Certificate program and is an active member of the Financial Planning Association of Georgia, the Georgia Association of Paralegals, and Rotary International.
Peter Odom
Pete received his B.A. from Columbia University in 1984 where he graduated cum laude and his J.D. from Pepperdine University School of Law in 1990. He currently serves as the Chief Senior Assistant District Attorney for Fulton County assigned to the Major Case Division, representing the State in homicide prosecutions. Peter has handled over 100 jury trials in superior court on charges ranging from DUI to murder.
Among his many teaching engagements include a five day comprehensive trial advocacy course for civil child protection attorneys and a five day comprehensive trial advocacy course for new prosecuting attorneys. Peter is licensed to practice law in both Georgia and New Hampshire.
Judge Steven Teate
Judge Teate has served as an administrative law judge at the Office of State Administrative Hearings (OSAH) for the State of Georgia since OSAH’s creation on April 1, 1995. He conducts and decides contested administrative cases referred by various state agencies. Immediately prior to the formation of OSAH, Judge Teate worked as a hearing officer for the former Office of State Administrative Appeals (Georgia Department of Human Resources), from October 1, 1993 to April 1, 1995. He primarily conducted administrative hearings of cases referred by Child Support Enforcement. Prior to his work in State government, he worked for a law firm and was in private practice with work including various legal matters such as bankruptcy, domestic matters, personal injury, probate and workers compensation. He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1968 to 1970, followed by the University of Georgia from 1970 to 1972, and was awarded a B.A. in history in 1972. He received a J.D. from Samford University's Cumberland School of Law in 1977 and attended Emory University School of Law from 1976 to 1977 to complete his J.D. requirements. Professional Associations include the State Bar of Georgia, the Administrative Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia, the Georgia Association of Administrative Judiciary (GAAJ), the National Association of Administrative Law Judges (NAALJ), and Stonewall Bar Association. He served as president of GAAJ in 2003 and as an Executive committee member of GAAJ in 2004.
Tim Wooten
Tim is a member of the State Bar of Georgia; Supreme Court of Georgia; Court of Appeals of Georgia; United States District Courts for the Northern and Middle Districts of Georgia; Atlanta Bar Association. He is also a member of State Bar of South Carolina: United States District Courts for the District of South Carolina; Greenville County Bar Association; South Carolina Defense Attorneys' Association Trial Academy - April, 2004. He serves as Adjunct Professor at Greenville Technical College's ABA approved Paralegal Program. He has been an associate at Mozley, Finlayson & Loggins, LLP in Atlanta, GA since May, 2006. Tim graduated from Georgia State University College of Law with his J.D. (cum laude) in May 2000. He was in the top 10% of his class.
